JUST IN: Abiola’s campaign DG Jonathan Zwingina is dead

The Director-General (D-G) of the MKO Abiola Campaign Organisation in the 1993 presidential election, Senator Jonathan Silas Zwingina, has died.

The former Senator reportedly died on Wednesday at the age of 70 in Abuja after a protracted illness.

The Adamawa-born Zwingina headed Abiola’s ‘Hope ’93’ presidential campaign organisation under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), during the 1993 elections.

The election was annulled by former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd).

Zwingina was a former Senator representing Adamawa Southern Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 1999 to 20007.

He was one of the founding members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) where he was elected in 1999 and reelected in April 2003.

He served on the Senate Committees of Works and Housing, Establishment, Internal Affairs, Information, Special Projects, Privatization and Economic Affairs.

Zwingina’s residence in Abuja was demolished in 2007, allegedly on the orders of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.
