* Elections must hold as scheduled, Oko-Jumbo’s faction insists
The Martin Amaewhule-led faction of Rivers State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the suspension of the local government election citing a Federal High Court Abuja judgment.
The lawmakers agreed to immediately transmit its resolution to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) via a ‘strong worded’ letter.
This is after members of the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, staged a protest march to the Department of State Security (DSS) office and the Government House both in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the DSS office, a stakeholder, Aron Chukwuemeka, said the major reason for the protest was to say no to the October 5 local government elections.
On the other hand, another faction of the Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo called for the local government election scheduled for Saturday, to be conducted in adherence with the rule of law and subsisting judgments enabling the exercise.
Oko-Jumbo, while speaking during plenary on Thursday, said it aligns with the position of the Executive arm of government and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in ensuring that a proper constitution of duly elected political leadership at the local government level is a reality in the State.
The Llocal government elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
Governor Fubara had declared Thursday and Friday public holidays in the State, to enable workers travel to their respective constituencies for the exercise.
