Gov Mbah lauds army, DSS, police over arms cache recovery in Enugu

Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, on Friday, commended the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army (NA), and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for their commitment to securing the country, particularly the South East region.

The governor gave the commendation shortly after visiting the Enugu State headquarters of the DSS, where he inspected a cache of arms and ammunition recovered on Tuesday from commanders of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) during a raid on the group’s armoury.

During the operation, DSS operatives, backed by troops of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, recovered a large cache of high-calibre weapons and ammunition.

Governor Mbah inspected some of the recovered items, including a rocket launcher, two rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) warheads, three RPG chargers, 11 AK-47 rifles, over 610 rounds of 7.62x39mm NATO ammunition, as well as National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniforms and lanyards.

The governor, who was accompanied by the Garrison Commander, Brig. Gen. A. Suru, the Commissioner of Police, C. B. Giwa, and other State officials, praised the sustained collaboration and professionalism of the various security agencies.

According to him, save for the diligence and intelligence-driven operations of the DSS and other security agencies, the recovered arms and ammunition could have been used by ESN members to unleash havoc across the South East and create the false impression that insecurity has overwhelmed the region.

Reports quoting security sources disclosed that the raid on the ESN armoury followed actionable intelligence obtained from arrested ESN members, indicating that the group was planning coordinated attacks in Enugu and other South East states to cause panic and create the false impression that bandits had infiltrated the region.
