- Gov Otti mourns
Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Kanayo Uzuegbu, in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, has died.
Abia State governor, Alex Otti, announced the passing on Saturday, May 31, 2026, saying the senior officer died during a battle with cancer.
Governor Otti made the announcement while delivering his acceptance speech as Labour Party’s governorship candidate for a second term ahead of 2027, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
He expressed “deep sorrow” over the loss, describing the late AIG as “a diligent, hardworking and committed officer who served the nation with dedication and professionalism.”
The governor prayed for “the peaceful repose of his soul” and asked God to grant the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones “the strength to bear the irreparable loss.”
A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the deceased police chief at the event.
The death of AIG Uzuegbu has elicited grief among members of the police community and stakeholders who knew him during his distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force.
Zone 9 covers Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states. Details on burial arrangements are expected from the family and Force Headquarters.
