The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that possession of a valid US visa does not automatically guarantee entry into the country, noting that the final decision rests with immigration authorities at the port of entry.
The mission explained that a visa only permits its holder to travel to a US port of entry to seek admission, while the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) determines whether the traveller will be allowed into the country.
The clarification was contained in a statement shared by the US Mission in Nigeria on its official X account, @USinNigeria, as part of its public awareness campaign on visa regulations and responsible travel.
“A U.S. visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. It lets you travel to a U.S. port of entry. When you arrive, U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether you may enter,” the mission stated.
The mission accompanied the message with the hashtags #VisaWise and #TravelSmart, urging travelers to understand the distinction between obtaining a visa and being granted admission into the United States.
