Unknown gunmen have returned to Umuchima village in Isiala Ngwa North LGA of Abia State and killed an indigene, who allegedly gave information to the military about their presence in the community.
The Nigerian Army, on Tuesday, announced that the troops of Joint Task Force, South East Operation, codenamed Operation Udo Ka, destroyed a camp in Umuchima.
Following the killing of the alleged informant, some natives of the affected village fled their homes in fear and relocated to nearby villages, promising to return as soon as the dust settled.
The fleeing villagers, who picked a few of their important property, said they do not want to become victims of circumstances.
Reports quoted one of them as saying: “The fear is real. They just stormed the village in a commando-like style and killed a native who they accused of being an informant (to the military).”
Personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen clashed recently in Umuchima village.
Over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers arrived at the village around 6 am, targeting suspected gunmen.
The gunmen were reportedly camped near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and the Mbaise axis of Imo State.
This came amid vow by the Abia State Government and the security agencies to flush out the gunmen terrorizing residents of the State.
The gunmen have killed many security operatives.
