As national leadership intervenes
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),
University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch,
has shelved its indefinite strike earlier scheduled to begin
on Wednesday, following an intervention from the union’s
national leadership.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the branch urged
members to disregard the earlier strike directive and
resume work, noting that the national leadership advised
resolving the matter through dialogue.
Signed by ASUU-UNILAG chairperson, Prof. Idou Keinde,
the notice stated that while the national leadership
acknowledged the branch’s struggle to secure full payment
of two months’ salaries, it recommended approaching the
issue through negotiations rather than industrial action.
Prior to the suspension, UNILAG management had
resolved to proceed with semester examinations already
scheduled to start on Wednesday, emphasizing that any
disruption could negatively affect students.
The university’s Head of Communication, Mrs. Adejoke
Alaga-Ibraheem, confirmed that discussions between
management and the ASUU executive were ongoing. She
stressed that students, particularly those involved in
SIWES, internships, and Law School preparations, remain
a priority.
“The university is mindful that students are at a critical
stage of the academic session. While engagement with the
ASUU Executive continues, all examinations scheduled for
Wednesday, March 11, 2026, will proceed as planned,” she
said.
Mrs. Alaga-Ibraheem added that any exams previously
postponed by Deans or Heads of Departments would be
rescheduled, with new dates communicated promptly.
From Thursday, March 12, 2026, all other examinations
will continue as planned, with deans ensuring necessary
arrangements for smooth conduct.
The management appealed to the university community to
remain calm and continue academic activities while
discussions with the ASUU leadership aim at an amicable
resolution.
