UNIBEN students trapped in rubble as 3-storey building collapses in Edo capital

Several students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are believed to be trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed in Ekosodin, Benin City, on Saturday morning.

Ekosodin shares borders with the University of Benin, and hosts a large number of student population.

The storey building on Ekhator Street collapsed during the early morning rainfall.

Our correspondent gathered that although some of the trapped students have been rescued, the search for others is ongoing.

The Dean of Student Affairs is said to be on the scene, coordinating rescue efforts alongside the university team.

One of the students at the scene reportedly confirmed that the university rescue team managed to evacuate some of the trapped occupants, though several others were severely injured.

He stated that the injured victims have been rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

“The rescue team is still searching for one of the victims who remains trapped inside the rubble, called from inside and the rescue team has continued its search to locate and rescue her and others who are still trapped,” the student said.

At the time of reporting, the university management had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
