- Akpabio loses Senate seat
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the gubernatorial election in Akwa Ibom State.
By this, the candidate of the party, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who is the incumbent governor, has secured a second term mandate of the people.
The governor polled 519,712 votes to emerge victorious over Nsima Ekere of the All Progressive Congress (APC) who came second with 171,978 votes.
The result was announced by the State Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Faraday Orunmwense, a professor and vice chancellor of the University of Benin.
Orunmwense, in the presence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the State, Mike Igini, made the announcement at the headquarters of the electoral body early on Monday morning.
Already, the
APC has result, which saw Governor Emmanuel winning 30 of the 31 local
government areas of the State.
Samuel Akpan, the representative of the APC, accused INEC of assisting the
PDP in rigging the election. He thereafter walked out of the collation centre
after making known his party’s rejection of the poll’s result.
The governor only lost in Essien Udim Local Government Area where Godswill
Akpabio, a former governor of the state and Senator representing Akwa Ibom
North West, comes from.
Akpabio had promised to deliver the State to the APC, after he
crosscarpeted in August last year.
Not only was he unable to deliver the State to his new party, the former
governor also failed in his bid to retain his Senate seat at the National
Assembly.
