Three CNG buses explode at Kaduna Motor Park

  • As police dispel bomb blast fears

Three luxury buses belonging to Silver Luxury Transport Company were destroyed in an early morning explosion at Mando Motor Park inKaduna.

The affected vehicles were powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), raising fresh concerns over the safety of the technology.

The incident occurred around 3:00am where the buses were parked in preparation for interstate trips scheduled for later in the day.

A manager with one of the logistics companies operating within the park, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the explosion occurred while the vehicles were stationary.

“Thank God no one was inside the vehicles. They were parked to board passengers this morning,” the source said, noting that the buses were newly acquired.

He, however, expressed concern over the use of CNG-powered vehicles, arguing that the technology may not yet be fully understood or properly managed in Nigeria.

“These vehicles are using CNG. We are not matured enough to use them,” he added.

The Kaduna State Police Command clarified the explosion was not a bomb blast, but a mechanical failure involving a gas-powered vehicle.

Its Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said preliminary findings indicated that one of the CNG-powered buses exploded due to overfilling of its gas tank.

The police added that no casualty was recorded, while the affected vehicle had been evacuated and the area secured, assuring that a full investigation has been ordered to ascertain the actual cause of the incident, and prevent a recurrence.
