Lagos State Government, through the State Safety Commission, has issued stern warning to night clubs the it will not tolerate overcrowding, which poses significant safety risks, including the potential for fire hazards.
The Director General/CEO of the commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, gave this warning on Wednesday expressing concern over the trend of overcrowding in several clubs and lounges across the city in recent time.
Mojola, while noting that the commission wholeheartedly supports the vibrant nightlife and the economic benefits it brings, said there is serious need to adhere strictly to authorized occupancy limits as approved by the commission.
According to him, on no account should any nightclub allow overcrowding which poses significant safety risks, listing such risks to include fire hazards, which could come from smoking in the public spaces, leading to “compromised emergency exits, and increased likelihood of accidents.”
He said these risks not only endangered the lives of patrons but also the staff and that of the general public, and strongly urging all owners and operators of hospitality venues in the state “to strictly comply with the safety measures and occupancy limits set forth by the Lagos State Safety Commission.”
He emphasized that these regulations were in place to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, disclosing that the commission had commenced rigorous inspections to ensure compliance.
The commission boss warned that any establishment found to be in violation of these safety regulations would face immediate closure and further legal actions as deemed necessary.
