A dead man in Kano, until recently, continued to draw salaries from the State government for about 10 months, unknown to the authorities.
The salary payment would have continued but for the dead man’s son, Yusuf Sulaiman Sumaila, who notified the government of the oversight. Besides, he returned the N328,115.75 paid in error to his father.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abba Yusuf on Digital Media, Abdullahi Ibrahim, revealed this on his verified X (formerly known as Twitter) account.
He said Governor Yusuf has commended the young man, Yusuf Sulaiman Sumaila, for returning the salary received through his dead father’s account to the government coffers.
Sumaila’s father died in October 2022 but the government continued to pay his salary until August 2023.
However, the young man, after the discovery, returned the salary to the State government and notified it that his father died nearly a year ago.
“Yusuf stated that the government had continued paying his late father’s salary into his account after his death in October 2022 until August 2023, when he made an official request for the payment to be stopped.
“To the governor’s satisfaction, Yusuf also requested to return the backlog of 328,115.75 to the government, for which the governor personally invited him to his office to thank him.
“Remarking, the governor commended Yusuf for his remarkable gesture, urging other young people to emulate him and uphold the value of honesty,” Ibrahim added.
