A renewed communal clash in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State has reportedly claimed scores of lives and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
The incident, which started on Monday, is between the people of Wanikade and Wanihem in Ukelle North, and is associated with land dispute.
Within the month of June, several lives and properties were lost in Obubra and Yakurr local government areas over a piece of land.
Residents in the area said that about 100 persons have been killed in this last conflict.
An eye witness who pleaded that his name should not be mentioned said the clash, which started on Monday, has lasted for three days without government intervention.
“Close to hundred persons have lost their lives due to land dispute in Ukelle North, Yala LGA,” he claimed.
Confirming the incident on phone, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Hafiz Inuwa said that, actually, there was crisis in the area, but that only one person was killed.
CP Inuwa also said that houses and properties were raided, stressing: “It’s just a little misunderstanding and the matter has been settled with the help of the police and the military.”
