Rivers is not Lagos, old video of Wike demonizing godfatherism resurfaces

* Exposes ex-Gov’s ambivalence

An old video clip that captured former governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike condemning godfather syndrome is currently circulating on social media.

In the video, Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was heard warning that the godfather syndrome affecting some states in Nigeria will not be allowed in Rivers.

He particularly said that the system of godfatherism may succeed in Lagos State, but not in Rivers.

“It may happen in Lagos State but it cannot happen in Rivers; we are quite different. As a governor, I will come and go and I can’t stop it.

“The day that my tenure ends, by the grace of God, I will go. When you are thinking that what is happening in Lagos State, we will do it here, it may be difficult.

“You can’t continue to say that you must be a godfather of a State. That is the problem and it is not possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rivers State is currently facing one of the worst political crisis in the country following face-off between Wike and the incumbent Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The two political warriors are battling for the leadership structure of the State.
