The University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, has honoured an expert in Career and Counselling, Professor Ngozi Osarenren, with the prestigious award of ‘Face of UNICAL @ 50’.
The award was given to Professor Orarenren in recognition of the contributions she has made in her chosen career both in Nigeria and abroad.
“We write to notify you of your nomination by the Central Planning Committee and UNICAL Alumni Association for the conferment of an award as the “Face of UNICAL @ 50” in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the University (1975-2025).
“In nominating you for this prestigious award, the University has considered your success in using the knowledge/skills acquired in the university in your chosen filed/professional career.
”The University also notes the worthy manner you have flown the flag of integrity for the University both in Nigeria and abroad; your past/future contributions to the development of your Alma mater (UNICAL) and your pride as an alumnus,” the institution wrote prior to the five-day ceremony, which started on March 17,2025,” the institution wrote, in notifying the award recipient.
While receiving the award, Prof Osarenren expressed her appreciation for the honour done to her, saying: “This award serves to extol the virtues of UNICAL, which is to ensure we encourage the young ones to read. Tomorrow, I have three awards – the best graduating student in Guidance and Counselling; the best graduating female student in the University of Calabar; and the best graduating student in Education.
“I instituted these prizes because I strongly believe that these are things that will help our young people to be motivated, because the people who will receive the awards tomorrow will motivate others to aim higher to get their next year.
“Thank you, Madam Vice Chancellor (Professor Florence Banku Obi; thank you, Chairman of UNICAL @ 50 committee; thank you Secretary of UNICAL @50 committee.
“I am very happy; I am proud. Thank you, our Chairman of Council, and all my friends that came to express their support for us,” she added.
An alumnus of UNICAL, Prof Osarenren currently lectures in the Department of Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG).
