Policemen have been drafted to the premises of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Abuja to quell workers’ protest over the reinstatement of the Executive Secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf.
Yusuf was reinstated on February 8 by the Federal government, voiding his earlier suspension by the Minister of Health, Prof Issac Adewole, following allegations of gross misconduct. He is believed to be under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Presidency had, in a letter to Adewole, signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, informed the minister of Yusuf’s reinstatement but made no reference to the allegations outstanding against him.
Incensed by the development, the workers began a protest when Yusuf resumed at the office on Thursday last week.
According to a source, the “workers had been told since Friday not to enter their offices in preparation for a protest today (Monday).”
The NHIS boss brought in police this morning because he heard of our planned protest,” the source claimed.
