Police promise to allow farm produce, livestock access into Rivers

… As Hausa community sues Wike over clampdown

The Police in Rivers have assured that henceforth, there will be free movement of agricultural produce into and from the State.

The assurance was given by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mukan, incidentally as the Hausa community instituted a court action against Governor Nyesom Wike over the arrest of livestock, farm produce and trailer drivers.

Mukan spoke in Port Harcourt on Thursday, during the inauguration of a Joint Technical Task Team on Emergency Response to COVID-19.

There are growing concerns over steady increase in prices occasioned by  shortages of foodstuff in Rivers State, especially Port Harcourt City and Obior/Akpor LGA, both of which the government had tightened the lockdown noose.

“The team will immediately hit the ground running to deliver on its mandates as well as stick strictly to their terms of reference,” Mukan was quoted as saying.

The CP urged members of the team to discharge their duties with professionalism and justify the confidence reposed in them by the Federal Government.

On the committee are Mukan, the NSCDC Commandant, Murktar Lawal and representative of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr. O. Igwe.

Others are the Nigeria Union of Journalists chairman, Stanley Job, and a representative of Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mike Brooks.
