Police personnel to undergo psychological, mental health test

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Ahmed Sanusi, has directed that all officers in the command undergo a full psychological and mental health assessment.

The police say this directive is part of ongoing efforts to improve discipline, professionalism, and the force’s operational effectiveness.

Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, announced this on Thursday after an emergency meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units.

Sanusi explained that the assessment aims to help officers become more emotionally stable, make better decisions, and perform their duties more effectively.

The statement noted that the assessment would begin with junior officers on Monday, May 4, 2026.

“In a decisive move to strengthen discipline, welfare, and operational efficiency, the Commissioner of Police also directed the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola and the Police Counselling Unit, to commence a comprehensive psychological and mental health assessment of all personnel of the command.

“The exercise, which will begin with junior officers on Monday, 4th May 2026, is aimed at enhancing emotional stability, sound judgment, and overall performance, both on and off duty,” the statement partly read.

The police chief explained that this initiative is part of wider reforms aimed at ensuring officers always uphold the highest standards of conduct, whether on or off duty.

Sanusi also warned against any form of indiscipline and encouraged officers to act professionally and follow human rights laws at all times while on duty.

He told senior officers to return to their units and inform their teams of the new rules. He also said that they must send compliance reports to the command headquarters.

The CP also warned that supervisors will be held responsible for the actions of the officers they oversee.

The police commissioner urged FCT residents to obey the law and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies using the official emergency numbers.

The move comes amid renewed public concern over police conduct following a viral video from Delta State, which showed a police officer allegedly involved in the killing of a suspect.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage and triggered internal disciplinary actions within the force, further intensifying calls for accountability and reform.
