Police nab ex-convict in Benin for armed robbery

* Two days after release from prison

Police operatives in Edo State have arrested an ex-convict, John Agbontean, for alleged robbery.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Moses Joel Yamu, said the suspect was arrested in connection with a robbery incident at the Restoration Gospel Ministry, situated at no. 11 Oviasuyi Street off Ogiemwenke in Benin City.

The PPRO said Agbontean’s arrest came two days after he completed a jail term for an earlier crime.

The suspect was arrested with a cut-to-size gun while attempting to rob the church.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being an ex-convict who was released from Oko Prison, Benin-City on December 19, 2024.

“He stated that he and his accomplice, one Ola whose surname is unknown, now at large, conspired to rob the aforementioned church of the proceeds from the Church’s end-of-year harvest thanksgiving where he was arrested in the process while his accomplice narrowly escaped arrest,” the PPRO added in a statement.
