The police in Delta State have arrested at least 43 persons who attempted to hijack New Year’s Eve celebrations in parts of Asaba metropolis.
They were arrested for violent attacks on police patrol teams and for hurling stones and other dangerous projectiles during the crossover night into 2026.
The suspects, including touts and hoodlums emboldened by the large crowds during the celebrations, were said to have engaged in acts of lawlessness by blocking major roads, engaging in illegal car racing, and driving recklessly and dangerously.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Thursday, said the suspects, in the process, knocked down some commuters, threw fireworks at innocent people, and caused widespread public disturbance.
“The situation degenerated further as these hoodlums resorted to violent attacks on police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous projectiles, while also burning tyres at key junctions, thereby deliberately obstructing free and safe movement, especially for worshippers returning from New Year church services.
“The Police, acting swiftly and professionally, deployed lawful crowd control measures to disperse the violent mob, restore order, and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“During the operation, 25 motor vehicles, eight tricycles, fireworks, various hard drugs, and other dangerous offensive weapons were recovered by operatives. The suspects are currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.”
The statement said the State Police Command unequivocally condemned the criminal, reckless, and unruly acts, warning that any attempt to exploit festive periods to foment violence, obstruct public roads, or attack security personnel would be met with firm and lawful resistance.
