The Airport Police Command has debunked reports of a terrorist attack or security breach at the Asaba International Airport, describing the security activities witnessed at the facility as a planned simulation exercise conducted by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said the exercise was conducted on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as part of efforts to assess and strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of security and emergency-response agencies.
According to the Command, the exercise was designed to test existing security response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures, as well as inter-agency coordination in dealing with potential security emergencies.
It explained that security personnel and other relevant stakeholders were deployed to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment for the purpose of evaluating their ability to respond effectively to a potential threat.
“The simulation exercise was therefore a controlled and authorised activity and should not be misconstrued as an actual terrorist attack or invasion of the airport,” the Command stated.
The police urged members of the public, particularly travellers and airport users, to disregard reports circulating on social media and other platforms suggesting that the airport had come under terrorist attack.
It also warned against the circulation of unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic among passengers and members of the public.
The Command assured travellers and other airport users that the security situation at the airport remained under control, stressing that all relevant security agencies were vigilant and committed to protecting passengers, airport personnel, facilities and other stakeholders.
It further urged the public to rely on verified information from authorised government and security agencies while supporting measures aimed at strengthening national security preparedness and protecting critical airport infrastructure.
