Police arrest man for excavating graves, stealing iron rods

*Uses proceeds to buy food, Indian hemp

The police in Bauchi State have arrested a 21-year-old man, Duada Saidu, for trespassing and stealing metal rods from graves at a Christian cemetery in the Yelwan Kagadama area.

The police spokesman, SP Ahmed Wakili, said that Saidu was apprehended on Friday after excavating several graves and removing iron rods with the intention to sell them.

Saidu, according to Wakili, confessed to the crimes upon interrogation, admitting that he had stolen multiple iron rods and sold them to scrap metal buyers in separate transactions.

He reportedly realized N9,500, N12,000, and N5,500 from different transactions.

Wakili said that Saidu uses proceeds of the illegal trade to buy food items and Indian hemp for his personal consumption.

Wakili specifically said: Following interrogation, Dauda Saidu confessed to the offences, admitting to stealing multiple iron rods and selling them to scrap metal buyers in separate transactions, amounting to N9,500, N12,000, and N5,500, respectively.

Dauda Saidu also disclosed that the proceeds were used to purchase an undisclosed quantity of Indian hemp and food items for personal consumption.

CP Auwal Musa Muhammad has instructed that Dauda Saidu be prosecuted following the conclusion of the investigation.

Additionally, he emphasised the importance of parental supervision and urged parents and guardians to be vigilant in monitoring their children and wards.”
