Peter Obi mourns Humphrey Nwosu

*Describes him as champion of Nigeria’s democracy

The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express his profound sadness over the passing of Prof Humphrey Nwosu, a former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Obi described Prof Nwosu as a “true Democrat,” praising his unwavering commitment to democratic values during his tenure as electoral umpire from 1989 to 1993.

He particularly highlighted Prof Nwosu’s courage in defending democratic principles even under a non-democratic government, “putting him out as a man who was ready even to sacrifice his life for the sake of democracy and good governance.”

Obi also acknowledged Prof Nwosu’s indelible mark on Nigerian history through his role in holding and upholding the 1993 presidential elections.

He lauded his commitment to “the truth and the best tenets of democracy” at a time when it was “delicate and even dangerous to do so.”

The Labour Party leader contrasts Prof Nwosu’s actions with the current state of Nigerian democracy, expressing disappointment that the integrity and independence seen during Prof Nwosu’s time are lacking in the present system, despite advancements in technology and funding.

Obi criticised the trend of “procured professors” who aid in electoral malpractices, a stark contrast to Prof Nwosu’s commitment to academic integrity and upholding electoral processes.

Obi called for more individuals like Prof Nwosu who are willing to “risk their lives for democracy,” recognising his passing as a significant loss for Nigeria.

He prayed for Prof Nwosu’s eternal repose, offered condolences to his family and supporters, and expressed hope for a “new Nigeria” where individuals of such unwavering commitment to democratic principles can continue to contribute.

Obi’s message ended with his signature “A new Nigeria is indeed POssible,” highlighting his continued belief in a more democratic and just future for Nigeria.
