Outrage as EFCC reportedly freezes Akwa Ibom govt accounts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly frozen the accounts of the Akwa Ibom State Government.

This is happening barely 24 hours after the EFCC also froze the accounts of the Benue State Government.

It was gathered that the anti-graft agency gave the order on Wednesday without giving any reason for its action.

Reacting to the development, Comrade David Akpan, National Secretary, PDP National Defenders, said the action is a deliberate ploy to unconstitutionally starve Akwa Ibom State of resources.

Akpan said: “Our attention has been drawn to an illegal freeze of the account of the government of Akwa Ibom State by agent of the Federal government.

“We greet this development as a brazen affront on the people and government of Akwa Ibom State and a slap to Nigeria’s democracy.

“We interpret this action as a deliberate ploy to unconstitutionally starve Akwa Ibom State of resources to aid ongoing development across the State. We interpret this as a ploy to sabotage the efforts of Governor Udom Emmanuel and his government in order to demoralise him and the administration.

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to join hands in solidarity with the people of Akwa Ibom State to condemn this illegality and demand for immediate lifting of the order.

“Furthermore, we appeal to the National Assembly and the international community to step in and save Nigeria’s democracy from being overrun by dictators in suits and agbada.”

Meanwhile, former governor of the State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has denied that he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), in order to escape being probed by the EFCC.

Akpabio, while speaking at a rally which held in his senatorial district on Wednesday, insisted that the EFCC did not find anything on him.

“I have never been charged to court… The EFCC did not find anything on me,” the former governor said.

Present at the event were: National Leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

Senators in attendance included: Abdullahi Yahaya, Abdullahi Gumel from Jigawa State, Muhammed Sani from Niger State, Gbenga Ashafa from Lagos State and Former Nasarawa Governor, Abdullahi Adamu.

Others were: Senators Abubakar Kyari from Borno State, Babajide Omoworare from Osun State, Magnus Abe from Rivers, Mao Ohabunwa from Abia and Nelson Effiong from Akwa Ibom.
