One person trapped as Lagos building collapses during demolition

One casual worker has been trapped under the rubble after a storey building collapsed during manual demolition on Adedoyin Street, Ijegun, Ikotun, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call about the incident at 1:44 pm on Monday, October 26, 2026.
The agency said it immediately sent its rescue team from the Igando Base to the scene.

When the team arrived, it discovered that one worker was trapped under the debris, while another worker who suffered a hand injury was immediately taken to a hospital.

LASEMA said it has begun a search and rescue operation with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The area was cordoned off to prevent further danger, while rescue efforts continued.

The Lagos State Government said it would investigate the incident to determine the cause of the collapse and establish whether building regulations were followed.

Meanwhile, LASEMA said its teams responded to three other traffic-related incidents across Lagos on Monday.

At about 1:30 am, the agency’s Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to an accident involving a Lexus SUV at Iyana Oworo, along the road leading to the Third Mainland Bridge.

The vehicle, with registration number BDG 404 KA, reportedly somersaulted after the driver lost control due to reckless driving.

One adult male sustained injuries and had been taken to a hospital before the rescue team arrived. No death was recorded.

Responders secured the scene, controlled traffic and worked with a private towing operator to move the damaged vehicle to a safe area. Traffic flow was later restored.

In Epe, LASEMA’s Whales Team responded to an accident involving an empty gas tanker on Ayetoro Road.

The tanker, with registration number T30015LA, reportedly suffered brake failure while climbing the hilly Paramount Road near Okeabata Junction. It then veered into the road median and blocked about 97 per cent of the road.

No casualty was recorded in the incident.
The rescue team, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service’s Okeoso Station, secured the area and arranged for a towing vehicle to remove the tanker.

At Arena, Oshodi, another LASEMA team responded to a truck that broke down on a railway track, disrupting train movement.

The truck, which was carrying goods, reportedly developed a mechanical fault involving its propeller. Its registration number was not known.

The team worked with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and soldiers to divert traffic and remove the truck from the railway track using LASEMA’s heavy-duty recovery equipment, known as Super Metro.

The truck was moved to a safe area, allowing both road and rail services to resume.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended LASEMA and other agencies involved for their response to the incidents.

The government said it remains committed to protecting lives and property and improving emergency response services across the State.

It also urged developers, property owners and contractors to obey building regulations and use certified professionals for demolition and construction work.

Motorists were advised to avoid reckless driving and maintain their vehicles regularly.

Residents were also encouraged to report emergencies through the State’s toll-free emergency numbers.
