Nigeria’s headline inflation rate fell slightly to 15.39% in August 2026 from 15.43% in July, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The latest figure represents a 0.04 percentage-point decline in the inflation rate.
In its Headline Inflation report for August 2026, the NBS said the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in the prices of goods and services, rose to 146.3 points in August from 145.3 points in July.
The bureau said the August 2026 headline inflation rate “showed a decrease of 0.04% compared to the July 2026 Headline inflation rate.”
On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation dropped to 0.71% in August from 1.57% in July.
The NBS explained that “in August 2026, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in July 2026.”
Food and non-alcoholic beverages had the highest contribution to the headline inflation rate at 6.16%.
Restaurants and accommodation services followed with 1.99%, while transport contributed 1.64%.
Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels accounted for 1.30%, while education services contributed 0.95%.
Health contributed 0.93%, while clothing and footwear accounted for 0.78%.
The report also showed that the average CPI for the 12 months ending August 2026 rose by 16.30%.
The NBS said this represented “a 12.02% decrease compared to 28.32% recorded in August 2025.”
The bureau also reported that urban inflation stood at 15.88% year-on-year in August 2026.
On a month-on-month basis, urban inflation fell to 0.28% in August from 1.90% in July.
The 12-month average for urban inflation stood at 16.28% in August 2026.
According to the report, this was “13.45% points lower compared to the 29.73% reported in August 2025.”
Rural inflation stood at 14.23% year-on-year in August 2026.
However, on a month-on-month basis, rural inflation increased to 1.79% in August from 0.78% in July.
The corresponding 12-month average for rural inflation was 16.02%.
The NBS said this was “10.45% points lower compared to the 26.47% recorded in August 2025.”
