Lock down: Abia govt responds, sends security personnel to Aro LGA

…To man boundaries with Akwa Ibom, Cross River

A swift response for security back-up has come from the Abia State government, which posted some vigilante officers to help man its boundaries with two neighbouring states.

To that effect, nine officers were deployed to Arochukwu on Sunday to beef up security at the boundary posts with Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

Their deployment followed a request by the Transition Committee Chairman, Mazi Emmanuel Kanu, to the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Prince Dan Okoli, when the latter visited the council on Saturday to evaluate the level of compliance with the directive closing all boundary routes with neighbouring states.

Kanu had, after taking the commissioner to the different boundary outlets to both Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, requested for re-enforcement from the Homeland Security office.

He specifically said that the numerical strength of security personnel at the disposal of the council was inadequate for the task, hence the need for a re-enforcement.

Observers have hailed the swift response of the government through the Homeland Security office as a demonstration of its seriousness to deal with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, which is the reason for the lock down and restriction of movements.
