Lagos govt announces emergency closure of Eko Bridge section

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to temporarily shut a section of Eko Bridge heading out of Lagos Island, to allow for urgent safety checks and rehabilitation works.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced this known in a statement on Sunday, stating that the closure will begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Osiyemi explained that the affected portion stretches from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa, while the lane inbound to Lagos Island will remain accessible to motorists.

To minimise traffic disruption during the period, commuters have been advised to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge when travelling to their destinations.

The commissioner also assured residents that traffic management and security personnel would be stationed on alternative routes to ease movement and maintain order throughout the repair period.

“In view of the closure between Apongbon and IjoraOlopa, members of the motoring public are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their desired destinations.

“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists. Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” the statement read.

The announcement follows recent concerns raised by the Federal Government over the condition of some major bridges in Lagos.

Last week, the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, disclosed that structural assessments conducted on key bridges in the State uncovered defects requiring urgent attention.

According to the minister, inspections carried out over the years, including recent underwater evaluations, revealed that some supporting structures beneath the Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge had shifted.
