Jury finds Trump guilty of sexual abuse, awards accuser E Jean Carroll $5m in damages

A Manhattan jury has found that Trump sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll, and awarded her $5 million in damages.

Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her during a chance encounter at a Manhattan department store. He has denied her allegations, calling her a liar. Carroll sued him last year for battery and defamation.

Trump attorney Joe Tacopina said his client is “firm in his belief that you can’t get a fair trial in New York,” given the makeup of the jury.

Tacopina, speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, did not elaborate on Trump’s comment about the nine-person jury of three women and six men, the majority of them people of color.

Mindy McGillivray was eating lunch at her home in Florida, just 10 minutes from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, when texts began arriving with news of the verdict.

She jumped out of her chair and ran to turn on the television. What she saw on the screen made her shed tears of joy.

Trump will appeal the verdict in which a jury found him liable on claims of battery and defamation against writer E. Jean Carroll, according to a statement from the campaign.
