Iran puts ‘Trump’ behind bars in mockery new art installation

Iran has unveiled a provocative art installation in Tehran featuring an impersonator of United States President Donald Trump locked inside a cage resembling a prison cell, using the performance to draw attention to a deadly American attack on an Iranian wedding.

The installation, positioned above one of the Iranian capital’s busiest squares, features the Trump impersonator rattling the cage bars, sleeping on a cell bed and imitating the US president’s famous dance to the song Y.M.C.A.

Behind the cage, an electronic billboard displays images of the deadly American strike on an Iranian wedding last month, with the performance drawing a sharp contrast between the impersonator’s antics and the destruction depicted on the screen.

One of the messages displayed on the billboard reads, “Failure to see this scene is a crime,” while yellow crime scene tape appears across the screen.

The performance is the latest example of Iran’s use of public billboards and provocative displays to communicate political messages, a practice that has become increasingly confrontational amid its conflict with the United States and Israel.

Following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February, political imagery across Tehran has taken on a more aggressive tone. A billboard erected at the capital’s central Enghelab Square over the summer, for instance, depicted Trump lying inside a coffin covered in graffiti.

Trump has also used political imagery to taunt Iran’s leadership, sharing social media posts, often generated with artificial intelligence, that ridicule the country’s clerical rulers or portray their destruction by American military firepower.

Meanwhile, Iran’s government and its supporters have relied on humour and satire to criticise the US president and his decision to attack the country, circulating memes and videos online throughout the war.
