Hoodlums raid Owerri Catholic chapel, cart away sacred items

The Archdiocese of Owerri has announced that the Chapel of Adoration at St. Mulumba Parish in Owerri was desecrated.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by the Archdiocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Patrick C. Mbarah, the parish said that unknown individuals broke into the chapel and took the Blessed Sacrament.

The incident reportedly happened early Wednesday morning while it was raining.

The statement appeared on the official page of the Ahiara Catholic Diocese.

According to the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Raymond Madu, the suspects reportedly got into the chapel by opening parts of the roof and entering through the ceiling, then left with the monstrance that held the Blessed Sacrament.

In response, the Archbishop of Owerri, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, asked parishioners at St. Mulumba Parish to hold a week-long prayer of reparation from May 1 to May 8, 2026, each day from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
