The 36 governors on Monday endorsed the establishment of state police to address rising insecurity in the country.
Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari, stated this during the National Security Summit organized by the Senate in Abuja.
The governors’ endorsement came days after the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo spoke in favour of the establishment of state police.
Yari, who is the Zamfara State Governor, said the establishment of state police would enable the country overcome the security challenges in some parts of the nation.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday presided over a meeting of the National Security Council, assuring that his administration recognizes the seriousness and urgency of the security situation of the country.
In attendance at the meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd).
Others government officials who attended were the Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Mansur Dan-Ali; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, and the Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), among others.
The agenda of the meeting was not known as there was no briefing of the media at the end.
However, the president in a tweet said later his administration is determined to implement carefully considered solutions that would earn the confidence of the citizens.
“Today I presided over a meeting of the Security Council. We fully understand the seriousness & urgency of Nigeria’s security issues and are determined to implement carefully considered solutions that will not only earn the confidence of Nigerians but also stand the test of time.”
