Ex-Senate President Lawan wins Yobe North APC ticket

  • Eyes 8th term in NASS

A former President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has emerged the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Yobe North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawan’s emergence followed consultations among party stakeholders and leaders in Yobe State, who reportedly agreed to adopt him as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.

The development means the longtime lawmaker is now set to seek an unprecedented eighth consecutive term in the Senate, having represented Yobe North since 1999. Before moving to the Senate in 2007, Lawan also served two terms in the House of Representatives.

Party loyalists and supporters at the meeting described Lawan as an experienced politician whose influence and legislative experience remain valuable to both Yobe State and the nation.

Speaking after his emergence, Lawan appreciated party leaders, delegates, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, promising to continue delivering quality representation and supporting policies that would improve the lives of Nigerians.

Political observers say Lawan’s return to the race further strengthens his dominance in Yobe North politics, where he has maintained a strong political structure for decades.

The former Senate President was among the leading contenders during the 2023 APC presidential primaries but lost the ticket to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Despite that setback, he retained his influence within the ruling party and the National Assembly.

With the APC ticket now secured, attention is expected to shift to the opposition parties and possible challengers ahead of the 2027 elections in Yobe North.
