DHQ lists 16 officers to face court martial over coup plot

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has unveiled the identities of 16 officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria recommended for prosecution over allegations of grave misconduct, including an alleged attempt to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

The development has heightened anxiety in the country especially against the backdrop of the initial rebuttal of the military high command that there was no coup plot.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, a Special Investigative Panel (SIP) recently completed its investigation, and concluded that a number of the officers have serious cases to answer.

Uba explained that those implicated would be subjected to trial by Court Martial in line with military laws and existing regulations.

He added that the probe reviewed the actions and conduct of the affected officers and uncovered behaviour that fell short of the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The defence spokesperson said that the exercise was strictly an internal disciplinary process aimed at safeguarding discipline, unity, and operational efficiency within the military.
