Brentford produced a commanding second-half performance to defeat Chelsea 3-0 on Friday, handing Xabi Alonso’s side another disappointing result in the Premier League.
The 5th-round encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium was goalless at half-time, with Chelsea creating opportunities but failing to turn their possession and attacking moments into goals.
Brentford broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Jaidon Anthony headed home from close range after Jannik Schuster sent a long ball into the area. The goal gave the hosts the breakthrough they had been seeking and shifted the momentum firmly in their favour.
Chelsea attempted to respond, with Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer among those involved in efforts around the Brentford penalty area. Neto had a promising effort blocked, while Palmer also saw a shot from inside the box blocked as Chelsea searched for an equaliser.
But Brentford remained dangerous on the counter and doubled their advantage eight minutes from full time.
Igor Thiago reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area in the 83rd minute, firing the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0.
With Chelsea pushing forward in search of a way back into the contest, Brentford continued to threaten in the closing stages. The hosts eventually added a third goal deep into stoppage time.
Fabio Carvalho completed the scoring in the 94th minute after Kevin Schade helped create the opportunity during a scramble inside the box. Carvalho made no mistake, slotting the ball into the right side of the goal to seal a comprehensive victory.
The result extended Chelsea’s difficult run in the league. The defeat was Chelsea’s third consecutive Premier League game without a win, while Brentford moved further up the table after their emphatic victory.
For Brentford, the win was built on a disciplined defensive display and an effective second-half attacking surge. The hosts kept Chelsea scoreless despite the visitors having several opportunities, before making their own chances count when the game opened up.
Chelsea, meanwhile, struggled to find a response after conceding the opener. Their attacking efforts became increasingly urgent as the game progressed, but Brentford’s defence repeatedly intervened to prevent a breakthrough.
The defeat will add to the pressure on Alonso and his players to find greater consistency as the Premier League season develops.
