The Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State has intensified its crackdown on suspected illegal revenue collectors across the state.
Already, arrested suspects have been arraigned before a mobile court for prosecution.
Speaking to journalists at the agency’s headquarters in Onitsha over the weekend, the Media Aide to SASA, Karen James, said the agency remains committed to its mandate of enforcing laws aimed at eliminating illegal revenue collection and extortion.
She identified two of the suspects as Michael Uwaoma and Mr. Ndubuisi Aniukwu, who were apprehended for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, respectively.
James further disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that Aniukwu allegedly acted under the directive of Mr. Anthony Onyekwelu, who was said to have imposed a daily remittance target.
“Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a competent Magistrate Court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case,” she said.
According to her, the court granted bail under strict conditions, including a N100,000 bail bond, a N300,000 fine, and the requirement of a verified Level 17 civil servant as surety.
She added that the case has been adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing.
The statement noted that, in line with its mandate, SASA operatives recently arrested three suspects in separate operations within Onitsha and its environs.
The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against illegal levies and extortion, stressing its commitment to restoring order, protecting legitimate businesses, and ensuring a safe and lawful environment for residents and traders.
