‘Abduction of 276 Chibok girls made possible by lack of exit doors’

Executive Director, Gender Equality, Peace and Development Centre, Prof. Patricia Donli, has said that the abduction of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram sect at Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, on 14th April, 2014, was made possible because all the school classrooms and the hostels have no exit doors.

“Apart from the location of the school at the outskirt of Chibok, the entire school was not properly fenced, which exposed the students to danger,” she said.

Prof. Donli, of the University of Maiduguri, stated this WEdnesday, while presenting reports and proposed guidelines at a Joint Consultative Forum on Promoting Safety and Security of Schools with Communities and Stakeholders from three local government areas of Chibok, Konduga and Maiduguri Metropolitan in Borno State.

The event was organised by Founding Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, WARDC, Dr. Abiola Akiyode Afolabi, in collaboration with Gender Equality Peace and Development Centre, GEPaDC.

While commending the security forces effort which led to the release of 21 of the abducted schoolgirls, Prof. Donli, however urged government and all stakeholders to provide adequate safety and security in all schools across the state so as not to allow the event of 2014 repeat itself.

She said the motive behind organising the forum was to bring stakeholders, teachers and students in the communities of Konduga, Maiduguri and Chibok in particular to come together, brainstorm on proposed guidelines to ensure safety and security in all schools in Borno.

She pointed out that the programme, which is a pilot scheme, centered on three states of Kaduna, Bauchi and Borno.

She said the three councils in Borno were chosen so that, at the end, basic minimum guidelines and plan of action will be implemented to ensure safety and security of children in schools, as well as their teachers and guardians.
