Operatives of the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) in Anambra State, on Thursday, destroyed cache of illicit hard drugs valued at over N80 million in the commercial town of Onitsha.
The exercise was carried out during a major enforcement operation targeting illicit drug activities in the area.
Media aide of the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), Karen James, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
She said the exercise drew widespread public attention, which underscores SASA’s firm commitment to dismantling drug networks and curbing criminality across the State.
The agency stated that the illicit drugs were seized from multiple locations, including Nsugbe, Umuchu, Ojoto, Oba, Nkpor, Nkwelle Ezunaka, and the greater Onitsha area.
The Managing Director of SASA, Hon. Monday Nwokoye, who spoke during the operation, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and touting.
He warned that individuals involved in the sale, distribution, or consumption of illicit substances would face strict legal consequences.
“Drugs must stop in Anambra. Anyone caught will be dealt with decisively,” he warned.
Nwokoye disclosed that the destroyed substances were seized from multiple locations, including Nsugbe, Umuchu, Ojoto, Oba, Nkpor, Nkwelle Ezunaka, and the greater Onitsha area.
He explained that the destruction was intentional and irreversible, ensuring the confiscated drugs would not re-enter circulation.
While describing illicit drug dealers and distributors as criminals whose activities pose serious threats to public safety, he noted that drug abuse fuels theft, violence, and broader insecurity within communities.
He therefore called on residents to actively support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities, noting that community cooperation remains essential to sustaining a safe and secure environment.
The SASA boss also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued support and commitment to strengthening security operations across the State.
He assured Ndi Anambra that SASA remains resolute in its mandate to eliminate drug abuse, touting, and other forms of criminality.
The agency further renewed its appeal to members of the public to always provide the outfit with relevant information that could boost its operations.
“If you see something, say something; together, we can build a safer and healthier Anambra State,” it added.
