US President, Donald Trump, has issued a warning to Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, following the capture of Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro.
Trump, while speaking on Fox & Friends on Saturday, suggested that the operation against Maduro may not be his last in the region, raising the possibility of action against Mexico, despite describing the country as a US ally and alleging it is run by drug cartels – an accusation he previously made against Venezuela.
“Something’s going to have to be done with Mexico,” he said.
The US president later directed sharper remarks at Colombia and its leader during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence, warning Petro to be cautious.
“I stick by my first statement. He’s making cocaine,” Trump said of Petro. “They’re sending it into the United States, so he does have to watch his a–.”
Petro, 65, is regarded as Colombia’s first left-wing president in the country’s modern political history.
Also speaking at the event, Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Cuba of being a major factor behind Venezuela’s long-running crisis, claiming the island nation had exerted deep influence over the country.
“This poor island took over Venezuela in some cases,” Rubio said. “One of the biggest problems Venezuelans have is they have to declare independence from Cuba—they tried to basically colonize it from a security standpoint.”
