Varsity suspends lecturer for alleged sex-for-grade offence

The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, has suspended a lecturer, Dr. Samuel Abiye of the Department of the Department of Curriculum Studies, for three months placing him on half salary over allegation of demanding sex from a female student for award of marks.

Abiye was allegedly recorded by a female student whom he had promised to help pass his course and other courses taught by other lecturers in the department, only if she could satisfy his sexual urge.

In a post by the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Ozo Mekuri-Ndimele, the management alleged that Abiye had asked the female student to meet him at a hotel where they were supposed to have intimately explored each other.

According to the VC, in the interim, the university has directed that all courses taught by Abiye for the first semester of 2020/2021 be “re-graded through conference marking to be supervised by the Dean of Education”.

The statement also disclosed that all the courses taught by the suspended lecturer and supervisees have been re-assigned to other lecturers in his department, while the matter has been referred to the University Staff Disciplinary Committee for “further investigation to determine his fate”.
