UPDATED: Kogi govt orders probe into House of Assembly blaze

An early morning fire, on Monday, razed the Kogi State House of Assembly complex located in the Crusher area of the capital, Lokoja.

The fire ripped through the roof of the Chamber, causing extensive damage to the floor of the House.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Mathew Kolawole, and the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara, were among the early callers at the assembly complex.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the blaze had not been established.

However, Hon Kolawole alleged sabotage, but declined to speak further on his suspicion.

Asked whether it could be linked to the recent feud between the Assembly and the Dangote Group, he said that is left to the security agents to establish.

“We should leave security people to do their work and give us a report, going forward,” the Speaker said.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State government has appealed to residents to remain calm over the fire incident that razed the State House of Assembly in the early hours of Monday.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, made the appeal through a statement in Lokoja.

Fanwo said that security and technical experts are already working hard to unravel the cause(s) of the inferno, which he said had caused significant damage to the complex.

“We urge the general public to be calm, law abiding and resist the temptation of being lawless as the government is capable of dealing with the likely outcome of the investigations.

“The state government will also make provision for temporary arrangements to ensure the legislative business is not completely halted as a result of the unfortunate incident,” he assured.

The commissioner, who described the incident as ”very sad”, said the State government would inform the general public of its findings as they unfolded.
