Transport minister orders probe into Abuja–Kaduna train derailment

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Ahmed Alkali, has ordered a thorough probe into the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment which occurred on August 26, 2025 at Jerre.

The minister directed the constitution of a multi-stakeholder committee to investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.

The panel is also tasked with recommending measures to prevent future occurrences and with developing strategies to improve the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s rail transport system.

Expressing deep concern for the safety of passengers, Alkali stressed that government would not compromise on its commitment to protecting lives and modernising rail services.

The committee is chaired by Musa O. Ibrahim (DOOPST), with Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu (STA, HMT), Engr. Zirra Finbar (D/RTS), Barr. Omotola Olusegun (D/Legal – Secretary), Dr. Kayode Opeifa (MD, NRC), and Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe (Railway Inspector) among its members.

Other members include representatives from Technics Engineering, CCECC, civil society organisations, as well as one male and one female passenger representative.

The ministry stated that the findings and recommendations of the committee would form the basis for reforms aimed at ensuring safer and more reliable rail operations across the country.
