Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has warned Nigerians against celebrating the possible United States military intervention in the country, saying such action could lead to greater instability rather than peace.
Sowore stated in a Facebook post on Sunday that United States President Donald Trump’s threat to launch military action in Nigeria under the pretext of protecting Christians might seem appealing to some, but history shows that foreign interventions often bring destruction instead of security.
He noted that people of all faiths and beliefs — Christians, Muslims, animists, and non-religious should resist welcoming such rhetoric, stressing that previous U.S. interventions in nations like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria left them more unstable than before.
According to him, Nigeria does not need external rescue but rather accountable leadership that ensures justice, protects all citizens, and breaks the cycles of corruption and violence responsible for the country’s decay.
Sowore added that Trump’s actions are not driven by genuine concern for Nigerians or their faiths, asserting that the nation’s redemption must come from within through true leadership and national renewal.
He wrote: “The latest threat by U.S. President Donald J. Trump to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may sound appealing to some. Still, history has shown this to be perilous.
“Whether you are Christian, Muslim, animist, or non-religious, no one should celebrate such rhetoric. The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before. They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground.
“What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign savior, but legitimate, accountable leadership, one that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and ends the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation broken.
“@realDonaldTrump does not care about Nigerians not Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our deliverance will never come from abroad; it must come from within, through real leadership (not the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s of this world) and national renewal.”
His comment came shortly after Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account on Saturday, instructed the U.S. War Department to prepare for a possible strike in Nigeria.
He accused the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to what he described as the “genocide of Christians” across the country.
Trump warned that the United States would immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria if the attacks on Christians continue.
He also indicated that America might intervene militarily to eliminate what he called “Islamic terrorists” responsible for the killings.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote.
He further stated: “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
