Senate okays ex-IGP Arase as PSC Chair

* 24 hours after Buhari’s nomination

The Senate, on Wednesday, confirmed the nomination of a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase (rtd), for appointment as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The resolution of the Senate, followed its consideration of the report of screening of the nominee, presented by the Senator Haliru Jika (APC – Bauchi Central)-led Committee on Police Affairs.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, wrote to the Senate urging it to screen and confirm the nomination of Arase for appointment as the Chairman of the PSC.

The President’s request was contained in a letter read on the floor by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

Buhari said the appointment was in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The recommendation of the Committee that Arase be confirmed was unanimously approved by Senators when it was put to voice vote by Lawan.
