Police nab 17 in Ebonyi over lynching of man accused of witchcraft

The police in Ebonyi State have arrested 17 suspects in connection with the killing of one Mr. Uromchi Okorocha, a resident of Enohia Itim village in Afikpo Local Government Area.

Reports said that Okorocha was burnt to death by an irate mob over allegation of practicing witchcraft.

He had earlier been accused by local youths of being responsible for the death of several individuals through alleged witchcraft and sorcery.

According to the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects mobilized and apprehended the deceased, “but instead of handing him over to the authorities and committing to the rule of law, they decided to take laws into their hands, becoming judge, jury and executioner”.

Adejobi said upon receipt of a distress call on January 3, the police operatives of the Uwanna Division mobilized tactical teams to the scene on a rescue mission “but the angry mob had already killed and burned Okorocha before the arrival of the police team”.

He added that a total of 17 suspects have already been arrested in connection to the murder.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemns this act of jungle justice in totality.

‘Citizens are once again urged to refrain from taking laws into their hands and report any suspected criminal activities to the nearest police division or formation around them for necessary action,” Adejobi added in a statement.
