A Police Inspector who allegedly shot and killed five persons and injured four others in Enugu has been dismissed from service.

He is also to be prosecuted over the incident, which happened at Golf Estate, Enugu, on June 20 this year.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 13, Mr. Muri Musa, approved the dismissal of Inspector Edem Ebong.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this via a statement in Enugu.

Ndukwe said the AIG also directed the prosecution of Ebong, hitherto attached to the Special Protection Unit SPU, Base 9, Umuahia, Abia State.

“The Enugu State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 13, Anambra State, AIG Muri Umar Musa, has approved the recommended punishment of dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force and prosecution of Inspector Edem Ebong, hitherto attached to Special Protection Unit, SPU, Base 9 Umuahia, for the offence of murder.

“The approval is sequel to the command’s conclusion of disciplinary trial and thorough investigation launched into the case of alleged shooting and killing of five persons as well as the injury of four others for no justifiable reasons, by the Inspector at Golf Estate, Enugu, on 20/06/2021.”

Reacting to the development, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mr. Okwu Nnabuike, commended the police for taking steps to getting justice for the victims.

“We are glad that at least justice is on the way for the victims of that unjustifiable and most gruesome killing.”

He added: “Now that he has been dismissed, we look forward to his trial in open court for murder.

“He committed a most atrocious act and that is why we demand that the law should show him no pity; he killed the same people he was being paid to protect without any form of provocation.

“We at the Ohanaeze youths shall continue to watch keenly to make sure that the case does not die a natural death,” the youth leader said.
