Police bust suspected cult meeting in Uyo, recover illegal firearms

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has disrupted a suspected cult gathering in Uyo, recovering firearms and other dangerous weapons during a swift operation based on actionable intelligence.

Police sources disclosed that operatives stormed Ikot Okubo, by Transformer, off Abak Road, Uyo, at about 3:30 pm on Monday, January 27, 2026, following credible information that suspected members of the Vikings Confraternity were holding a meeting in the area.

On sighting the police team, the suspects reportedly fled the scene, abandoning several weapons. Items recovered during the operation included one locally made double-barrel gun loaded with two cartridges, two locally fabricated pistols each loaded with a cartridge, and a cutlass.

The Command says it has since intensified patrols, raids and covert surveillance within the area and its environs, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

Police identified one Solo (male) as the alleged leader of the group and the prime target of the ongoing manhunt.

Reaffirming the Command’s resolve, the Commissioner of Police warned that the police would not relent in its determination to rid Akwa Ibom State of cultism and other criminal activities, stressing that individuals or groups threatening public peace would be decisively dealt with.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to support crime prevention and public safety.
