Police arrest man who climbed 120ft high mast to protest hardship

The police in Abuja have arrested a man who attempted suicide in protest over the biting socio-economic hardship in Nigeria.

The man identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau had earlier on Monday climbed a 120ft high mast at ASO Radio in the Katampe area of the nation’s capital, threatening to take his own life.

Spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, through a statement on Monday evening, said: “With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau was prevented from taking his own life. He claimed to have been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. The suspect is presently in police custody and in a stable condition.”

Adeh added: “Further development will be communicated in due course.”

Shuaibu is the second Nigerian in recent years to have threatened to take his own life over the country’s economic conditions. In 2018, one Nurudeen Lliyasu climbed a telecommunication mast in the nation’s capital, vowing to take his life due to hardship.
