The police in Lagos have apprehended two suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate believed to be responsible for a series of attacks in Eleko and surrounding communities.
The suspects, identified as Peter Segun and Mufutau Lateef, are alleged to specialize in robbing Point of Sale (POS) operators within the area.
Their arrest was carried out by operatives of the Tactical Squad, popularly known as the Hyena Base, stationed at Elemoro, as part of efforts to support divisional police stations and the Area Command in curbing criminal activities.
Reports quoting security sources said that the police swung into action following a distress alert received at about 11:00 pm, reporting an ongoing robbery operation at Eleko Junction. A patrol team led by Inspector Segun Adewake was immediately mobilized and dispatched to the location.
On arrival, the officers discovered that the suspects had already dispossessed a POS operator of his bag and cash. The suspects reportedly attempted to evade arrest by fleeing into nearby bushes but were subsequently tracked and apprehended.
Items recovered during the operation include a double-barrel pistol, one live cartridge, the gang’s operational vehicle, a Lexus ES 300 with registration number SMK 105 JD, as well as the stolen bag belonging to the victim.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the gang who escaped during the operation.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody and have reportedly made useful confessional statements to aid further investigations.
