* After hastily declaring APC’s Binani as governor-elect
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hand over its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Barr Hudu Yinusa-Ari to the police for prosecution.
The party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described Ari’s action (of declaring candidate of APC, Aishatu Ahmed Binani, winner of the governorship election) as a “civilian coup”, which violates the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The PDP also requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba-Alkali, to sanction the Adamawa Police Commissioner for providing cover to Ari.
The party insisted that its candidate, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, is in clear lead and questioned INEC’s delay in concluding the process and declaring the winner of the election.
Yinusa-Ari, on Sunday, stirred controversy when he announced Aishatu ‘Binani’ Ahmed of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of Saturday’s supplementary election over the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP.
After the announcement, INEC immediately summoned Ari to Abuja and declared his announcement an invalid declaration and an usurpation of the powers of the collation and Returning Officer.
